October Breaks Activities

Make your next holiday break an adventure. We’ve got a list of great activities that will have your little ones smiling from start to finish. Whether it’s a short walk, exploring The Enchanted Woods, spotting autumn leaves, going on a scavenger hunt or simply spotting the local wildlife that shares our Loch Lomond home, there’s plenty of things for you to see and do.

Spotting Ancient Trees & Autumn Leaves

Did you know that ancient trees are very important for the local wildlife? And at our Loch Lomond resort we have trees that are over 100 years old. Here’s how you spot our ancient trees:

  1. VERY large trunks
  2. Lots of knobbly warty bits
  3. Fungi growing from the trunk
  4. Hollow parts
  5. Dead branches sticking out from the crown
  6. Gnarled bark with lots of nooks and crannies

In autumn our tree leaves are bursting with beautiful and vibrant colours including red and yellow. Red leaves can be caused by sunny, dry days and colder nights, whereas yellow leaves can be caused by cloudy and rainy days. Did you know that when the daylight decreases and the air temperature falls, that’s when leaves fall?

Don’t forget to collect your fallen leaves in a bag as you’ll need them for the next round of activities.

Leaf Crown

Once you’ve got all your leaves, lay them out on the table and make a leaf crown. It’s a simple process, we’ve listed the steps out below-

  1. Take a band of card that’s long enough to go around your head
  2. Staple or tape (whatever you have) to the right size
  3. Staple, tape or glue your leaves to the card until you have a majestic leaf crown fit for the King or Queen of the woods

And there you have a beautiful and colourful crown.

Leaf Challenge

Now it’s time for a competition… Challenge your brothers, sisters or parents to see who has the best leaves. There’s lots of different competitions including sorting your leaves into their colours, sizes and shapes. If you can think of more categories, have another competition.

Scavenger Hunt

This is one of our favourite activities, the scavenger hunt. Go exploring through our 400 acre resort and see how many autumnal items you can tick off your list. Remember, only collect items which have fallen to the woodland floor. Here’s a list of different things you should look out for –

  1. A brown acorn
  2. A leaf with “teeth” (zig zag edges)
  3. A plump shiny conker
  4. A waxy, shiny evergreen leaf
  5. Rowan berries
  6. A leaf with curved edges
  7. A pine cone
  8. A lichen covered twig

Please, don’t forget to wash your hands after your resort adventure picking up all these autumn goodies.

Go exploring and see how many of these autumnal items you can tick off your list. Remember, only collect items which have fallen to the woodland floor.

Wildlife Spotting

With rolling hills, glistening lochs and lush farmlands, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is home to an abundance of local wildlife. When you stay at our resort this autumn, don’t forget to look out for our local residents, you never know when they’ll come to say hi!

Early risers are often fortunate enough to spot our resident roe deer; a small deer with a reddish brown coat in the summer but a grey-brown coat in the winter. With a black nose, white chin and rump, roe deer are quite easy to spot. Fawns also have a coat speckled with white spots – our very own Bambi.

We’d also recommend you look out for our resident swans. This year we’ve seen at least two breeding pairs on the resort, often spotted in the loch at both ends of the resort. Swans are omnivorous birds but have a mainly vegetarian diet. So, don’t worry they won’t steal your snacks!
